This article evaluated the effects of an interpersonal skills program based on artistic expressions to reduce intimate partner violence in college students. The research was of explanatory type, quasi-experimental design and used the Dating Abuse questionnaire (adapted by Osorio, 2014), the Interpersonal Skills questionnaire with reliability of 0.81 having as results in the entry test in terms of violence a mean of 88. 16 and after the program was applied it decreased to 81.2, in interpersonal skills the mean of 46.6 (...) increased to 53.3 with large effect size according to Cohen's d 7.889 CI95% (6.246-9.532), statistically significant differences were found in terms of violence. The Lewis-Sider argument from vagueness is one of the most powerful objections against restricted composition. Many have resisted the argument by rejecting its key premise, namely that existence is not vague. In this paper, I argue that this strategy is ineffective as a response to vagueness-based objections against restricted composition. To that end, I formulate a new argument against restricted composition: the argument from determinate vagueness. Unlike the Lewis-Sider argument, my argument doesn’t require accepting that existence is not vague, but (...) only that it is not vague in a specific way, which, I argue, is entailed by restricted composition. I show that the rejection of this species of vague existence follows from assumptions even friends of vague existence should be happy to accept. (shrink)

This paper investigates the semantics of implicit comparatives (Alice is tall compared to Bob) and its connections to the semantics of explicit comparatives (Alice is taller than Bob) and sentences with adjectives in plain positive form (Alice is tall). We consider evidence from two experiments that tested judgments about these three kinds of sentence, and provide a semantics for implicit comparatives from the perspective of degree semantics.

El estado actual de competición en el espacio exterior sitúa a las capacidades estratégicas espaciales de los países en el objetivo de la planificación estratégica de todos ellos. Los organismos internacionales están cobrando conciencia de la necesidad de proteger los activos espaciales ante un creciente número de amenazas, lo que requerirá de un esfuerzo adicional en cuanto a medios para mitigar sus efectos. La aproximación entre el espacio y la defensa, para poder actuar en este nuevo escenario, propicia la participación (...) de los organismos de defensa y seguridad y exige a los Estados el aporte de esta dimensión de defensa que se requiere para ello. España, tanto a través del Ministerio de Defensa como en otras iniciativas que requieren de su concurrencia, está preparada para contribuir a esta llamada desde la OTAN, Unión Europea y Naciones Unidas, con los medios disponibles y las medidas que su contexto país le permitan. Este trabajo analiza el deber del Estado parte en la Convención Americana sobre Derechos Humanos de adoptar medidas legislativas o de otro carácter para cumplir con las obligaciones de respeto y garantía de los derechos y las libertades reconocidas en ella y el rol que juega el control de convencionalidad para asegurar su disfrute y goce. Resalta la importancia del Poder Legislativo en la promoción, respeto y garantía de los derechos humanos y la necesidad de adoptar, en el proceso de (...) formación de las leyes, las medidas pertinentes, incluyendo el control de convencionalidad, para evitar la vulneración de los derechos humanos y la consiguiente responsabilidad internacional del Estado por la presencia de normas jurídicas contrarias a la Convención Americana en su derecho interno. La presente ponencia analiza las relaciones de opresión, en los términos de I. M. YOUNG, que se generan a partir de las principales disposiciones del Sistema de Pensiones chileno establecido por el Decreto Ley 3.500, de 1980 y la Ley Nº 20.255, de 2008, el cual al basarse en estereotipos de género, produce graves consecuencias para las mujeres en materia de pensiones al no abordar las estructuras que asignan a las mujeres determinadas tareas en la sociedad, repercute en el monto (...) de sus pensiones y las somete a condiciones de mayor vulnerabilidad en relación con los hombres. The worldwide problem of corruption is one that requires greater knowledge about responsible leadership. Based on the literature on responsible leadership, developmental psychology, and moral development, the purpose of our study is to understand the constructions of the motivational drivers behind the behaviors of a responsible leader. Using biographical and narrative methodologies, we analyzed the individual motivational drivers of Carlos Cavelier, a recognized responsible leaders who grew up and works in Colombia, a social/economic context characterized by institutional fragility and corruption. Our findings suggest that the coherence between the immediate environments of development of the future leader, configured optimal environments in which the leader developed the moral conscience that guides his behavior as a responsible leader. Our study points out the need not to take the development of responsible leaders for granted, and presents propositions that allow for a deeper understanding of the micro‐foundations of responsible leadership, highlighting the importance of the contexts in which leaders are raised and in which they develop. Thus, our study has the potential to be heuristic and generative of future studies. (shrink)

This study examines the relationship between cooperative business relations in small businesses and environmental protection, one of the most important policies of social responsibility in manufacturing. We reviewed the literature and carried out an empirical study of 930 small manufacturing firms in Spain. Results indicate that small businesses that maintain and improve their cooperative relations through business networking with universities, competitors, suppliers and customers spend more on environmental protection. El presente trabajo es un intento de aproximación crítica –desde la propialógica del sistema– a la supuesta visión teleológica presente en la concepción hegeliana de la ética. En primer lugar, analizaremos este componente teleológicoy mostraremos cómo la imposibilidad de una realización fáctica en la propia dimensión del espíritu objetivo de este supuesto telos conlleva a una redefinición total del recorrido del mismo. En segundo lugar, en tanto la nueva figura aparece carente de dirección y reclama, a lo sumo, su consumación (...) en una dimensión distinta a la fáctica, se hace necesario introducir algún elemento que nos permita sostener el recorrido del espíritu objetivo; es en este punto que arribamos a la noción lacaniana de “sentido”, la cual estudiaremos tanto en su significación original (es decir, entendiendo “sentido” como despliegue masivo de significantes cuyo único orden es una dirección) como en su particularización mediante la figura del “sentido ético”. La parte final de nuestro trabajo estará dedicada a examinar las consecuencias que tiene nuestro intento de síntesis para una real comprensión del fenómeno ético. (shrink)

Las enfermedades raras en España afectan directamente a más de 3 millones de personas, por lo que puede considerarse como un problema de salud de gran interés social. Los datos que se presentan en esta investigación son el resultado de un análisis de contenido sobre el tratamiento que la prensa otorga a los afectados de enfermedades raras, a través de los textos de las noticias y fotografías presentes en los principales diarios españoles. Tomando la teoría del framing como base teórica (...) se revelará el conjunto de posibles encuadres, sin tener prefijados de antemano un número determinado, y se descubrirán los encuadres noticioso latentes que pueden quedar ocultos a simple vista, así como las imágenes que acompañan a las noticias. Los resultados ayudarán a descubrir la interpretación que la prensa española hace de las más de 7 mil enfermedades raras catalogadas, así como del resto de actores relacionados personal o profesionalmente con estas patologías. Background: Limited evidence exists comprehensively assessing physical fitness attributes, physical activity behaviors, nutritional habits, and nutritional knowledge according to sex in basketball players during early adolescence. Insight of this nature could be used to optimize the training process and lifestyles in young basketball players.Objective: To compare physical fitness attributes, physical activity levels, nutritional habits, and nutritional knowledge between elite male and female basketball players under 14 years of age.Methods: Twenty-three U-14 basketball players from the same elite basketball academy participated in (...) this study. Physical fitness attributes were assessed using a basketball-specific test battery, while physical activity levels, nutritional habits, and nutritional knowledge were assessed using questionnaires.Results: Male players exhibited better physical fitness in all tests. Of note, a high proportion of players declared never or only sometimes eating fruit and vegetables. In addition, relatively poor nutritional knowledge was evident in all players with the group correctly answering <50% of nutritional questions overall and according to sex.Conclusion: These findings emphasize the necessity to perform individualized prescription of training stimuli across sexes to optimize the physical preparedness and development of youth basketball players. Additionally, strategies such as nutrition-focused education interventions may be necessary in this population given the low consumption of fruits and vegetables, as well as the poor nutritional knowledge observed in players. En este artículo se resaltan las semejanzas entre el teatro griego de los siglos V y IV A.C, y los aspectos dramáticos de la Apología de Sócrates y el Banquete de Platón, argumentando a favor del carácter filosófico de aspectos como la puesta en escena y el manejo de los personajes. Parahacerlo se replantea la relación entre la obra de Platón y la de los poetas, cambiando el foco de atención de su famosa censura a las representaciones teatrales, para iluminar (...) su empleo de mecanismos dramatúrgicos articulados con planteamientos éticos y políticos. Se concluye que Platón utiliza recursos del teatro griego, pero los extrapola y los transforma creando un nuevo tipo de drama. (shrink)

Quality standards fulfilment is an essential task in manufacturing processes that involves high costs. One target is to avoid the presence of burrs in the edge of machine workpieces, which reduce the quality of the products. Furthermore, they are not easily removed since the part can even be damaged. In this paper, we propose an optimized Convolutional Neural Network, to detect the presence of burrs in images of milling parts. Its design is focused on the optimization of classification (accuracy) and (...) performance metrics (training time and number of trainable parameters). The proposed architecture identifies burrs with a 91.16% accuracy in the test set, outperforming existing models as EfficientNetB0. It also reduces the number of trainable parameters from other models as AlexNet by 1.5 million. The prediction process just takes 48.39 milliseconds per image. Finally, in order to check if the model gets a high activation in the region of interest, a visual explanation of the model is also carried out by using Gradient-weighted Class Activation Mapping. La narrativa de José Saramago es centro de análisis reciente para todos aquel que incursionen en la literatura contemporánea. A través de La caverna, el escritor expone un sinnúmero de situaciones que deben ser reflexionadas y que en el presente artículo se abordan desde la perspectiva de los estudios culturales. Entre otros, se resalta el uso del lenguaje popular, la dialéctica entre lo rural y lo urbano, y finalmente la exclusión social y el consumismo. Este es, por lo tanto, un (...) estudio de análisis crítico de la obra La caverna de José Saramago, apoyado además en los trabajos interdisciplinarios que otros pensadores han ofrecido al respecto. El aporte desde los estudios culturales y la crítica realizada por Saramago no son ajenos a la preocupación por el ser, pues este se ve acorralado por las dinámicas que la sociedad impone. (shrink)

Accurate measurement of livestock weight is a primary indicator in the meat industry to increase the economic gain. In lambs, the weight of a live animal is still usually estimated manually using traditional scales, resulting in a tedious process for the experienced assessor and stressful for the animal. In this paper, we propose a solution to this problem using computer vision techniques; thus, the proposed procedure estimates the weight of a lamb by analysing its zenithal image without interacting with the (...) animal, which speeds up the process and reduces weighing costs. It is based on a data-driven decision support system that uses RGB-D machine vision techniques and regression models. Unlike existing methods, it does not require walk-over-weighing platforms or special and expensive infrastructures. The proposed method includes a decision support system that automatically rejects those images that are not appropriate to estimate the lamb weight. After determining the body contour of the lamb, we compute several features that feed different regression models. Best results were achieved with Extra Tree Regression ($R^{2}$=91.94%), outperforming the existing techniques. Using only an image, the proposed approach can identify with a minimum error the optimal weight of a lamb to be slaughtered, so as to maximise the economic profit. (shrink)

Unfortunately, there are still cases of domestic violence or situations where it is necessary to call for help without arousing the suspicion of the aggressor. In these situations, the help signal devised by the Canadian Women’s Foundation has proven to be effective in reporting a risky situation. By displaying a sequence of hand signals, it is possible to report that help is needed. This work presents a vision-based system that detects this sequence and implements it in a social robot, so (...) that it can automatically identify unwanted situations and alert the authorities. The gesture recognition pipeline presented in this work is integrated into a cognitive architecture used to generate behaviours in robots. In this way, the robot interacts with humans and is able to detect if a person is calling for help. In that case, the robot will act accordingly without alerting the aggressor. The proposed vision system uses the MediaPipe library to detect people in an image and locate the hands, from which it extracts a set of hand landmarks that identify which gesture is being made. By analysing the sequence of detected gestures, it can identify whether a person is performing the distress hand signal with an accuracy of 96.43%. (shrink)

This paper seeks to highlight the French philosopher Michel Foucault's contributions regarding his analysis of power. In this sense, the text proposes a conceptual transition around the ideas that could have interested the author within a digital context, integrating some notes and examples from the 2019 Chilean mobilizations.The article has an initial section that exposes genealogy as a way of approaching social reality. Then, it shows the social behaviors anticipation possibilities and their relationship with the information available on the web. (...) This paper presents an overview of my work in philosophy from my first book on Friedrich Schiller and the political sublime to my most recent project on listening to traumatic forms of violence. Starting with a reflection on the autobiographical character of philosophy, I propose to take up the question of an aesthetic dimension of philosophical critique, where aesthetics is understood as an always already embodied perspective on the world, on truth, and on philosophical activity, as well as an always (...) already political realm, where the distribution of sense pre-determines our approach and articulation of experience. Departing from aesthetics understood and deployed as critique, the paper moves on to ask about the specific frameworks of sense or grammars that determine in advance the conditions of audibility in the realms of memory-building and history-making—particularly in those contexts where historical, political, and institutional forms of violence produce silencing and erasure. Putting in dialogue the latter with decolonial studies, I (re)interpret “traumatic violence” as a colonizing form of violence, understanding that one of its central aspects is that it is not only an assault on life but on the conditions of production of sense that make life legible as such. In this context, my project on grammars of listening seeks to carefully unpack these complex intersections while also explaining why I believe that a radical form of listening is an essential subversive/imaginative strategy against traumatic/colonial violence. Las actividades de fomento de la cultura científica se han convertido en una práctica habitual de las instituciones de investigación, que destinan presupuesto y recursos humanos a este objetivo. Cada vez más personal científico y técnico incorpora esta misión a sus tradicionales tareas de investigación y formación. Sin embargo, mientras la investigación y la docencia cuentan con indicadores establecidos, las actividades de divulgación siguen estando consideradas como un ejercicio extraordinario, pocas veces reconocido institucionalmente. En este sentido, el uso de unos (...) indicadores de cultura científica contribuiría a favorecer un cambio de mentalidad y a la obtención de datos objetivos sobre los que orientar las acciones de comunicación social de la ciencia. En este contexto, el Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), a través de su Vicepresidencia Adjunta de Cultura Científica, se ha propuesto analizar las actividades desarrolladas en esta línea, entre 2011 y 2019, en relación a los siguientes indicadores: 1) la inversión económica; 2) el personal dedicado a cultura científica; 3) el número y tipo de actividades; y 4) el público al que se llega. Entre las principales conclusiones, destaca que el CSIC cuenta con una masa crítica más o menos estable de unas 200 personas que se dedican a tareas de cultura científica. Cada año se realizan alrededor de 15.000 actividades (presenciales y no presenciales) en las que se implican alrededor de 3.000 trabajadoras y trabajadores del CSIC. Cada año participan cerca de un millón y medio de personas de manera presencial. (shrink)

A partir de investigaciones realizadas en la Universidad Católica de Chile entre 1979 y 1984 se pudo constatar la creciente influencia que la filosofía católica tuvo en Chile desde fines del siglo XIX y primera mitad del siglo pasado, producto, especialmente de la influencia que la Encíclica Aeterni Patris de León XIII, promulgada en 1879, y la acción que la propia Universidad Católica, tuvo en la intelectualidad católica chilena. De esta forma surgieron destacados pensadores chilenos que desde una perspectiva de (...) pensamiento católico incursionaron en la metafísica (Lira Pérez, Finlayson, Gandolfo y Martínez), en la difusión de la filosofía cristiana (Miller, Restat, Escudero, Larson, Silva, Rosales y Jiménez), en la filosofía del derecho (Peragallo y Lira Ulrquieta), en la filosofía política (Frei, Castillo y Bustos) y en la filosofía de la educación (Hurtado); la mayoría hace su análisis y aporte desde el tomismo o desde el neotomismo (Maritain), sin descuidar el diálogo con otras posturas y filósofos de otras posiciones. Resumen En este artículo expongo los aspectos principales del debate suscitado por la aparición del libro de Adolfo Sánchez Vázquez Ciencia y revolución: el marxismo de Althusser. Presentaré primero la crítica del filósofo hispanomexicano a la obra de Louis Althusser y después explicaré la contracrítica del también filósofo Enrique González Rojo que aparece en su libro Epistemología y socialismo. Por último, ofrezco una interpretación de ambos momentos que las concibe como partes de un capítulo significativo de la historia de la (...) filosofía en México.In this article I present the main points of a debate raised by the book Science and Revolution: The Marxism of Althusser by Adolfo Sánchez Vázquez. I begin by addressing the criticism of the Spanish-Mexican philosopher towards the work of Louis Althusser and then I explain the counter-criticism to this approach set forth by -the also philosopher- Enrique González Rojo in his book Epistemology and Socialism. Finally, I offer an interpretation in which both moments in the debate are conceived as a significant chapter in the history of philosophy in Mexico. (shrink)

En este artículo se analiza el uso de categorías como lo monstruoso y lo doméstico en la cuentística de la ecuatoriana María Fernanda Ampuero. La interpretación de estas historias se realizará desde el género literario del horror y se hará énfasis en el uso de motivos góticos para señalar cómo esta apropiación sirve para dramatizar la posición de la mujer latinoamericana frente a diversas violencias estructurales que se intensifican en segmentos poblacionales especialmente vulnerables. Al estudiar el gótico desde una perspectiva (...) crítica feminista se analizarán los espacios de confinamiento físicos y simbólicos que van desde el castillo embrujado en la tradición clásica hasta el cuerpo femenino como último espacio de resistencia en el contexto latinoamericano, cautiverios ante los cuales lo monstruoso representa tanto la fuerza que repliega al sujeto femenino como su posibilidad de transgresión. Este artículo propone una interpretación amplificada de la serie La Peste en Ceppaloni (1977-1997) del artista-arquitecto ítalo argentino Clorindo Testa: un conjunto de mapas, dibujos y murales que trabaja en torno a la incidencia de los problemas ecológicos en la condición humana y su hábitat. El texto plantea en su desarrollo una triple aproximación a la obra: la narrativa-visual, la arqueológica y la antropológica. Desciframos la estructura de mito dibujado que se desarrolla en el Medievo en la ciudad italiana de (...) Ceppaloni, de donde procede la familia de Testa, y el rol de sus protagonistas: roedores, “untadores”, el propio arquitecto, la villa medieval y su castillo, así como el itinerario de la peste negra durante el siglo xiv. Esta serie tiene un correlato en el trabajo de este autor que recupera la figuración para recobrar una idea de humanismo. En su manifiesto creativo; arte, arquitectura y ecología cohabitan. Testa simultanea en esta serie lo popular y lo erudito con múltiples técnicas. La síntesis resultante forma parte del imaginario de la sociedad. Los dos relatos de la obra —la plaga y el deterioro ecológico— coexisten actualmente, y por ello resulta sugestiva su revisión en una suerte de exaltación del presente. (shrink)

En este trabajo se intenta localizar el lugar en el que pudo asentarse el castillo de Penna Cadiella mencionado en el Poema de Mio Cid. Para ello, se retoma la hipótesis que en su día planteara P. Guichard sobre su ubicación en la cima de la Sierra de Benicadell (Valencia-Alicante) y se aportan nuevos datos documentales y arqueológicos. Asimismo, se analiza el capítulo 371 de la Crónica de Jaime I en el cual se relata la batalla que, por (...) su posesión, libraron las tropas del rey aragonés contra al-Azraq a mediados del siglo XIII. The aim of this study is to try to make use of real numbers for representing an infinite analysis of individual notions in an infinity of possible worlds.As an introduction to the subject, the author shows, firstly, the possibility of representing Boole's lattice of universal notions by an associate Boole's lattice of rational numbers.But, in opposition to the universal notions, definable by a finite number of predicates, an individual notion, cannot admits this sort of definition, because each state of an (...) individual subject is characterized by the values taken by an infinite number of predicates, each of whom may appear or disappear in the next state.The notion of “degree of identification of an individual notion” is then introduced and arithmetized by a rational number.As an individual notion can be defined by a convergent succession of degrees of identification, the real characteristic number of such an individual notion can be defined by the corresponding convergent succession of rational numbers, satisfying Cauchy's conditions for the convergence of successions. Many pragmatist and non-representational approaches to cognition, such as the enactivist, have focused on the relations between actions, affectivity, and habits from an intersubjective perspective. For those adopting such approaches, all these aspects are inextricably connected; however, many questions remain open regarding the dynamics by which they unfold and shape each other over time. This paper addresses a specific topic that has not received much attention: the impact on future behavior of not fulfilling possibilities for social interaction even though their (...) fulfillment is desirable within a given context. Inspired by Gibson’s theory of affordances and Dewey’s account of habits, these situations will be characterized as events where an agent does not act upon an inviting affordance for social interaction due to a conflict which he or she experiences between given concerns, needs, and social norms. This conflict leads to a sense of unfulfillment that may eventually bring about a crisis and revision of habits. Through specific examples, this work presents the potential impact of the connection between affordances, habits, and affectivity on everyday situations. It therefore represents an exploration of the common ground between pragmatism and enactivism and an attempt to contribute to a process-based approach to social interaction. (shrink)

Let ‘semantic relevance’ be the thesis that the wide semantic properties of representational mental states (like beliefs and desires) are causally relevant to behavior. A popular way of arguing for semantic relevance runs as follows: start with a sufficient counterfactual condition for causal or explanatory relevance, and show that wide semantic properties meet it with respect to behavior (e.g., Loewer & Lepore (1987,1989), Rescorla (2014), Yablo (2003)).This paper discusses an in‐principle limitation of this strategy: even the most sophisticated counterfactual criteria (...) systematically misclassify irrelevant properties as relevant when they stand in certain kinds of modal co‐variation or ‘entanglement’ relations to genuinely relevant properties. This entanglement problem, I argue, is more general and more serious than proponents of the counterfactual strategy have recognized: it threatens recent interventionist arguments for semantic relevance, and is not easily solved by appeal to proportionality or naturalness. I end by suggesting that proponents of semantic relevance may need to shift their attention from patterns of counterfactuals to the lawful psychological generalizations that explain them. (shrink)
